Empowering the Lyocell process through sustainable and innovative solutions
——Likih Li, Business Creation Manager of Kemira
On April 22, 2025, at the 5th Lyocell Industry Forum held in Hangzhou, Likih Li, the Asia-Pacific Business Creation Manager of Kemira Group, delivered a speech titled Empowering the Lyocell process through sustainable and innovative solutions, sharing Kemira's innovative achievements and practical experience in the Lyocell process, attracting the attention of many industry professionals.
With a development history of 105 years, Kemira is a global leader in sustainable chemical solutions for water-intensive industries, having undergone multiple transformations. From its early days as a state-owned sulfuric acid and phosphate fertilizer plant to its current focus on water-related chemical strategies, the company operates in 118 countries and regions, boasts 58 production facilities, and employs 4,698 people worldwide. In the Lyocell industry, Kemira provides a range of critical chemical solutions, backed by its strong research and development capabilities and extensive business layout.
During the conference, Mr. Li emphasized Kemira's innovative solution to the issues of biofilm and sludge during the Lyocell production process - the Kem B11 new biofilm and sludge control product. In Lyocell production, the presence of an aqueous environment and nutrients facilitates bacterial growth, leading to the formation of sludge, which disrupts equipment operation, causes product defects, and results in losses in production efficiency. Kem B11 breaks through traditional bactericide concepts by inhibiting biofilm formation through interference with bacterial cell communication, rather than directly killing the cells. This product is highly effective, functioning at extremely low doses, and has been granted global patent protection, making Kemira its sole supplier. Kem B11 has already been approved for use in some countries, significantly improving product quality while reducing defects caused by biofilm and sludge detachment, lowering chemical usage, and demonstrating excellent compatibility with other process chemicals without causing equipment corrosion.
Regarding spinning oils for Lyocell fibers, Mr. Li pointed out that most mainstream spinning oils currently derive from viscose fiber applications and cannot fully adapt to the properties of Lyocell fibers. Kemira has invested significant effort in custom research and development of spinning oils for Lyocell fibers, promoting sustainable industry development. Kemira's spinning oils are free from mineral oil, comply with EU regulations, and are single products that are easy to use. Performance evaluations show that in terms of continuity, stability, and spinnability, Kemira's spinning oils outperform market samples, effectively reducing fly waste and total fiber fuzz while enhancing fiber cohesion. Additionally, Kemira possesses robust spinning oil development capabilities, with a professional formulation development team and advanced laboratories that can validate through yarn testing lines and small-scale production lines, allowing for rapid commercialization based on market feedback.
Kemira's presentation at the 5th Lyocell Industry Forum provided innovative chemical solutions for the Lyocell industry, which are expected to drive the industry to make new strides in sustainable development, helping to enhance product quality, optimize production processes, and improve market competitiveness, generating positive responses within the industry and injecting new momentum into future industrial development.
